Fish Stocking

If it's the initial stocking of a new pond or an existing pond, it is important to maintain proper predator to prey ratios. Your All American Lake Management Consultant will advise you on the proper stocking ratios and species needed to support strong growth rates in your game and forage fish.

Some of the more popular fish for stocking are:

Large Mouth Bass                    Spotted Sunfish                Red Breast Sunfish

Golden Shine                       Mosquito Fish                              Blue Gill

Stocking fish that eat nuisance vegetation provides long-term and cost-effective algae and aquatic weed control. Grass carp prefer to eat submerged rooted aquatic vegetation that is tender. When that is no longer available, they move on to less-desirable plants, such as Hydrilla. Grass carp may not control some plants like filamentous algae especially if the water is cold. The DEP permits sterile grass carp in Florida.

Fish stocking should generally be done during either fall or spring, preferably when water temperatures are less than 65 degrees F. Never stock a pond if water temperatures exceed 75 degrees F. Handling stress is reduced in cooler water but will cause delayed, high mortality in warm water.

The basics for a Fish Stocking Program are:

  • Recommended species
  • Government Requirements
  • Number of fish
  • Expected results
  • Timing and cost

*Please note that  the availability of most fish is seasonal and variable.*
